Honest Visibility

Why we built Honest Visibility for small businesses

Business owners deserve a straightforward answer to a new question: does AI recommend my business?

Small-business websites have always had a basic job: help the right people find the business, understand it, and take the next step. For years, that discovery path mostly meant Google, maps, referrals, and links from other websites.

That path is changing. People now ask ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, and other AI tools the kinds of questions they used to type into a search box: “Who is a reliable roofer near me?” “Which local shop can handle this repair?” “What company would you recommend for this problem?”

A business can have a solid website and still have no idea what those systems say about it. That is the gap we built Honest Visibility to address.

A useful question that ordinary reports did not answer

Traditional SEO tools are useful. They can show rankings, traffic, backlinks, technical problems, and search queries. None of that stopped mattering when AI answers arrived.

But those reports do not always answer the question a business owner is actually asking: When a potential customer describes their need to an AI assistant, does my business appear?

I wanted a way to test that question using the language a real customer might use. The answer needed to show more than a score. It needed to preserve what the AI said, identify the sources behind the response, and give the owner a practical next step.

Many visibility platforms are designed for marketing teams that monitor hundreds of prompts every month. That model can make sense for a large brand. It is a poor starting point for a local contractor, professional service, retailer, or five-person shop that first needs to know whether there is a problem worth solving.

Start with one real customer search

Honest Visibility starts small. A business owner enters the kind of question a customer would ask and runs one scan for free. The report shows whether the business appeared, what the response said, and which sources supported the answer.

You can see the format before running anything in the example free report. There is no subscription required just to ask the first question.

If that result matters, the optional $29 complete analysis goes further. It checks a broader set of customer questions across multiple AI providers, verifies important business claims, reviews up to three competing websites when safe matches are available, and turns the evidence into a prioritized improvement plan. The example complete report shows what that additional analysis contains.

The progression is intentional: learn something useful for free, then pay once only if a broader answer is worth it.

A scan is evidence, not a promise

AI recommendations change. Providers use different sources and models, and two similar questions can produce different answers. A visibility scan is a documented observation of what happened—not a permanent ranking and not a guarantee that every customer will see the same result.

That limitation is important. A tool should help you make a better decision, not turn a variable answer into a magic score.

The useful patterns usually sit underneath the recommendation:

  • Is the business described clearly on its own website?
  • Are services, locations, qualifications, and important claims supported by evidence?
  • Is business information consistent across the website, Google Business Profile, directories, and other trusted sources?
  • Do credible third parties mention or review the business?
  • Can search engines and AI systems crawl and understand the important pages?

Those are not tricks for manipulating an answer engine. They are the same durable foundations that help customers and traditional search engines understand a business.

The website is still the foundation

AI visibility does not replace SEO, a useful website, or a well-maintained Google Business Profile. It gives us another way to see whether those pieces are communicating the right facts clearly enough.

That is why Honest Visibility grew naturally out of our website work. Honest Web Designs already helps small businesses make their services, locations, proof, and ownership clear online. We also build practical AI tools for specific business problems and have written about where AI actually helps small businesses.

The new tool connects those two areas. It shows what AI systems can find and recommend, then points back to the website, content, business profiles, and outside proof that may need attention.

Built around the same Honest promise

We called it Honest Visibility because the product follows the same rules as the rest of our work: explain what is being checked, show the evidence, be clear about the limits, and do not force a small business into more service than it needs.

The goal is not to make every owner become an AI-search specialist. It is to make one new part of online discovery understandable enough to act on.

If your customers might ask AI to recommend a business like yours, you can now see what happens before deciding whether anything needs to change.
